Hi!
I'm the man with most mis-pronunciation and mis-writing than George W Bush.
This is my "blog" in which I'll write about my amazing and awful road to The LateShow.

First of all why I wanna go to The LateShow also if I write and speak english as a Rumanian writes and speaks Italian?
Imagine a tipical italian Sunday afternoon with a boring Serie A.
What can do a typical italian? He can watch tv.
(Oh my God! Italian Tv on sunday afternoon sucks!)
Imagine a typical italian family fighting for the remote control... "Domenica In" against "Buona Domenica".
Who will win?
Maybe the insanity...
Since as I'm more famous than Luca Calvani and Raffaello Balzo, and they are on tv even given sunday also I can be on tv even given sunday!!!
(also if my english is worst than the President Bush one)
So since as Nicky and Paris, my poodles, hate the italian television I must emigrate, and I choose the States, the Dave's LateNight Show.
I'm going on tv!
I don't know when, but I know how... maybe as guests, maybe acquiring a ticket (priceless with MasterCard), maybe in the CBS Mailbag.

So, even given Wednsaday I'll send a mail to Dave wondering if he'll read it on LateShow.
(Great idea!!! Don't worry for my bad english I'm gonna use Bablefish!!)
Even given Wednsaday I'll post my letter (and my opinions) in this thread and then I'll send it to Dave.

So this is "my flavour" letter, my fisrt letter to Dave.
(hoping to improve my english as soon as possible)

Was randomly flicking through the channels the other night until i came across a program on Channel 4 in which hear hear Italian PM Prodi was being interviewd in English; i did expect him to put on display some half-decent English, to say the least - mainly because of his past duties as EU politician, you see - debatable contents aside, to my surprise his spoken English was astonishingly poor; poor vocabulary, poor grammar and last but not least poor accent, cutting the long story short that was something to be seriously ashamed of.

Broadly speaking, nobody would deny the fact of some inevitable interference between native and target languages, especially at an early stage in the learning process - for example, learners at a beginner level, when required to expand their communication skills in the target language, are more likely to resort to literal translation; even more advanced learners, when they enter an unfamiliar realm of the language they are learning where their vocabulary is poor, would also tend to translate from their mother tongue - to some extent, how they translate, shows their ability or inability to keep interference between the two languages at bay.

It is my contention, from my own experience both as learner and translator, that the larger and more authentic the exposure to the target language the better. Why? Basically because more often than not we encounter in the mechanics of the target language aspects which simply lie beyond the grasp of precise language laws and therefore, of logical explanations, I think that in these cases learners need more sound examples than good explanations.

While i agree on the fundamental role grammar plays in foreign language teaching and on the way the rules it devises are of great avail to the learner, I would like to draw attention to the other main component in a language system: vocabulary and especially collocation. It seems to me that appropriate collocation is as great a challange for the learner as correct grammar. Learners who are constantly exposed to the target language are more likely to learn by repetition than rules; especially when a language system is defying any possible logical explanations ... so, repetition can turn out to be learners' only best friend - as opposed to the awful lot of false friends between English and Italian.

What do you reckon Tal, your valuable opinion would be muchly appreciated here.

First off having now read your post three times I am truly impressed with your grasp of the subject at hand and your ability to clearly and concisely communicate it.

I only wish I could do the same with my spoken Italian let alone my written Italian.

In a nutshell you are bang on.
Not only with language the more we as human practice anything the better we get at it. While any language requires an exposure to basic grammatical rules the true litmus test is in practical application. I do have one caveat however and that the person in the process of learning and practicing any language is practicing with people who are using the language correctly in the first place. English due to its constant evolution (adoption of other words and phrases from many cultures, up to 2000 a year) and hence fluidity is extremely frustrating for people learning it as a second language. The only way to keep up is canstant practice.
To give an example for comparison; Most modern spaniards would be able to read their literary classic "EL CID" in the original without too much difficulty. Further many of the concepts and ideals expoused in the work are still clearly understood today. In English a comparitive work would be Chaucer's "The Caterbury Tales". Try and find any modern english speaking person who can read it let alone understand it without extensive university study. Most english speakers will actually fair better if it is "read" to them by someone who knows the language.
What this illustrates is how difficult english is to keep up with. You again have to continually practice to keep up and with good practicioners.
