I'm curious about knowing what people think of football in their countries, so I would like to see what u think, maybe to see new players around the world.
I'll start with my country, Mexico.
Soccer here is the national sport, everyone watches soccer, but that's not because of the great level our local tournament has. Our tournament is full of corruption, cheats and awful displays, our league is so boring I don't watch it any more. There's always bad refs, boring matches and I'm worried about corruption, I've just watched how the team of my city wasdemoted to 2nd division with lots of many questionable ref aparitions.
The good thing is that the level of our players is growing, after 2006 World Cup, many players were signed to play in Europe, some of them won their respctive league, PSV, Stuttgart, etc. But there's a new generation of young players that on sub-17 World Cup, I like th 9 year old Giovanni Dos Santons who plays for Barcelona. We've just found Nery Castillo who plays for Olympiakos in Greece, who's very exciting to watch, and there are some players that deserve to be mentioned, some of wich have dragged interest from Europe, like youngster Andres Guardado, who was wanted by Real Madrid, inter and Milan.
So, how's soccer in your country? |

An excellent post javo-22.
Canada has come a long way since its last world cup appearence in 1986 in Mexico where they failed to even score.
Canada currently has one of the better youth development programs in the world with well over 1 million players in organized soccer.
While we do not have the issues of corruption that plague many countries it is the level of refereeing and coaching development that we lack the most.
Having the U20 WC hosted here will greatly build on the excitement of last years WC in Germany.
The most developed game in Canada is ironically the womens game where Canada is favoured to win in China next year.
I find one of Canada's biggest issues is who do we cheer for. With Immigrants from the world over many find it difficult to figure out who do they really cheer for at a tournament like the under 20 WC.
Regardless Javo i will be looking to Mexico as a dark horse in the tournament especially for the talent of its youth programs. Also if I am to cheer any team from North America or Carabiean It has to be Mexico and never the USA... You of all people on this forum can understand why. |

Guys this is a wonderful topic: football at our backyards. Javo your country has better football than many others in the world. Tal, your Canada is a rising star and we look forward to seeing them in the near future. May be you can pick out some prospects and enlighten us on their potentials and probale destinations.
As for me, my country Uganda has a rare trend in that performance of Club football inversely measure with national team performance. When clubs are doing well, the national team does the opposite and vice versa.
Today, the national team is in fantastic form (evidence: defeat of Nigeria on June 2nd in Kampala and impressive away record) and we have the best chance to qualify for the African Nations' Cup to be hosted by Ghana next Jan-Feb. Uganda last played in this tournament in 1978 (before I was born) and went up to the finals only to lose 0-2 to Ghana under dubious circumstance that then Ugandan President Idi Amin called 'unAfrican' and not brotherly.
Clubs on the other hand rose steadily and by 1985 Ugandan clubs were worth mentioning continentally with SC Villa (my home town club) wreaking havoc in East Africa and Africa at large playing in two continental finals. There were also Parastatal clubs like Kampala city Council (KCC) F.C, Police, Prison, Bank of Uganda that played good football. the peak was in 1992 when Majid Musisi (Villa legend) was signed by Stade Rennes of Ligue 1 (France) and Jackson Mayanja of KCC joined Esperance of Tunis. Today club football is in a death bed as people think it is a crime to love the local game, most people as well take it as a birth right to identify with Foreign teams espcially those from England. Some of use who go for local league fixtures every fridays are labelled fanatics and 'local'. Do you why local games are played on Fridays and Wednesdays? It is because if they are put on weekends, people won't attend as they are busy cheering the ManUs, Liverpools and Arsenals of England.
Then came the decline of Ugandan club football during the time when a Satelite TV channel came to Uganda and started broadcasting English football (1994) and it was free of charge (not pay per view that was the case before). People became crazy and abandoned the local game. We grew up watching the Serie A and Bundesliga but people abandoned it also. Some of us stuck with Italian and German soccer till today.
Currently the national team is made up of players who play in other countries; Ibrahim Sekagya in Redbull Salzburg, David Obua, Kaizer Chiefs, Nestrooy Kizito Belgrade Red Star, Godfrey Massa at El Masry (Egypt) being the hottest names. there are only 5 local players on the national roster.
Majority of the people here support Brazil, France and England because of colonial and colour reasons. (But I differ because I support every Italian and Latino interest - because I spent my entire childhood with Italians).
Here poverty is so deep rooted that survival ranks as the top priority for people and not soccer but soccer remains the only event that unites the country together.
A point to note is that refereeing and football administration in Africa is the worst world over: corruption, bribery, suspicion of witchcraft, etc |

Tal, I think Canada is doing a great job on rising the interest for soccer, I see lots of similarities between your process and the one USA followed last years, other sports there have gathered more attention as I know, I know there are MLB NBA and I'm not sure if NHL teams there in Canada, I'm sure your national team will develop, that has happened before, and just like you I'll cheer obviously Mexico and just about any other team that is not named USA.
Interesting comments you mentioned Obita, that people prefer british soccer rather than local one, it's all the way opposite here, people get to love soccer even if thay have access to other leagues. Here in Mexico people cheer for brazil too, but I think it's because they know it's the team with the most stars and the one that has won the most.
You made a request for prospect so here are mine: As you may know Mexico won Sub-17 World Cup and has improved young programs for developing players, know I think the rest of the world has noticed the talent here, there are looking to our youngsters now, and as a result of it, PSV has signed my favorite prospect, Andre Guardado, who I've talked to you before, he has hablity and skill, he tries things other ones do not attempt, pretty good player, nice long-shot, he dribbles, scores, has vision and speed, he can play left midfield or left defender.
The other one I like is Giovani Dos Santos who has brazilian parents, he plays for Barca's B team but some insist he'll go to the first team this year, he has played all his career there, something like Messi, he's just 19 I think, so he's playing in Sub-20 WC held in Canada, he scored yesterday an awesome goal, and some even compare his habilitis with Dinho, only that he's a forward, people say the world cup star will be chosen form him or Arguello from Argentina. Carlos Velais another fine promising forward, he know plays for Salamanca but his rights are owned by Arsenal.
What about you guys? |

Salamanca!!! Sala and Compostela were may favourites in the late 80s and early 90s because of their never-say-die attitude. So to have a prospect like Velias play for them is wonderful especially if he brings them back to the Primera.
Thanks Javo for the info on Guardado (name sounds like that of one of my all time favourite Marcelo Gallado). Hopefully we will see Dos Santos play for Barca A team soon.
Ugandan football future lies in the under 16 who have won tournaments (Gothis Cup in Sweden for the last 4 years) and were in Peru this year of an under 16 international and lost the finals to a Peruvian side. So we hope in 8-10 years they will form a solid backbone for the national side. |

| Actually Guardao has not yet signed with PSV, he has anotherproblem mexican football has, the excess of money that makes players to stay instead of searching sucess in other leagues, this time, money makes the team that owns Guardado make him stay, he wants to go, he doesn't want money, but his team doesn't and is offering more money |

| Last night i watched Chile-Mexico and I must say two players caught my eye i.e. Guardado (of course) and Castro. They are young but very 'stubborn' and can play very well in either Spain, Italy or Portugal. |

Well, of course I agree with Guardado (although he came back from a lesson and I think he didn't play well, he can do much better), but I've seen Castro lots of times and trust me, he ain't a good player, he always gets to rival territory and fails to land a good pass, I'll give another name to watch for he didn't played vs. Chile, because coach didn't want to risk him, he's just 23 and is the new mexican sensation... Nery Castillo, you may like this goal vs. Brazil
